Stainless Steel 201 is a chromium-manganese-nickel austenitic stainless steel developed as a cost-effective alternative to the 300 series (e.g., 304) due to nickel shortages during World War II 28. While it offers some corrosion resistance and good formability, its performance is inferior to 304 stainless steel, particularly in harsh environments.

Key Properties
(1) Mechanical & Physical Properties
Density: 7.93 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: ~515 MPa (varies with processing)
Elongation: 55–60% (good ductility)
Hardness: ≤183 HB (softer than 304, easier to machine)
Magnetic Properties: Slightly magnetic due to cold working (austenitic structure)
(2) Corrosion Resistance
Moderate resistance: Suitable for mild environments (indoor, dry conditions).
Weak in acidic/saline conditions:
Prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments (e.g., coastal areas) .
Degrades 10–100x faster than 304 in acidic conditions .
(3) Weldability & Formability
Good weldability: Can be welded using standard methods (TIG, MIG).
Easy to form: Used in stamping, bending, and deep-drawing applications .

Applications
Due to its lower cost, 201 stainless steel is widely used in decorative and light industrial applications, including:
(1) Consumer & Decorative Uses
Kitchenware: Sinks, cookware (non-premium brands) .
Architectural trim: Handrails, decorative panels, elevator interiors.
Jewelry & watches: Watch cases, bracelets (due to polishability) .
(2) Industrial & Light Structural Uses
Pipes & tubes: Decorative tubing, exhaust systems (low-cost automotive parts).
Mesh & filters: Perforated sheets for ventilation and screening .
Appliance parts: Refrigerator panels, washing machine drums.
(3) Limitations
Not suitable for:
Marine environments (high chloride exposure).
Chemical processing (strong acids/alkalis).
High-temperature applications (loses strength above 300°C).
